Get ready for Big Data from Space (BiDS) 2025

The Big Data from Space 2025 (BiDS’25) event is the next milestone in a series of conferences (dating back to 2016) that bring together the global community to explore the transformative potential of space-derived big data and emerging technologies. Building on the success of previous editions, BiDS’25 will continue to foster collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing among industry leaders, researchers, policymakers, and space enthusiasts.

A legacy of innovation

The last edition of BiDS, in 2023, set a strong foundation for the future, with over 700 participants from more than 50 countries converging to discuss the latest advancements in space data and its applications. The proceedings showcase a collection of high-quality papers and highlight several key achievements, ranging from cross-domain synergies to open science and FAIR data, AI-driven insights and policy impact.

The structured conference agenda was meant to share knowledge while encouraging participants’ contributions and connections.

This included participant-driven elements such as an industrial exhibition area, lightning talks and birds-of-a-feather sessions, which saw very high engagement. It also included joint OSGeo, Pangeo, QGIS communities code sprints for collaborative open-source software development. One big success story from the latter activity is the development and release of the XDDGS package. XDGGS is an extension for Xarray, a popular Python library for handling multi-dimensional arrays, that integrates Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGS) into geospatial data analysis workflows.

What to expect at BiDS’25

This year’s event will take place in Riga, Latvia, from September 29 to October 3, 2025.

Preceded by a training course on the foundations of Big Data that will equip attendees with the skills needed to engage with the latest developments in space and big data technologies, BiDS’25 will explore even more how space-driven insights and foresight can shape the future of policy, society and technology.

Today, the accessibility of global, free, and open space and geospatial data is expanding through EU initiatives such as the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, Destination Earth (DestinE), the Common European Data Spaces, and the AI Factories, or ESA’s Digital Twin Earth program. Additionally, advancements in Deep Tech, including quantum computing, neuromorphic sensing, and connected computing in space, are paving the way for new disruptive applications.

These emerging trends and technologies will be part of the core themes of the event:

  • Big data-driven transformation in policy and society
  • Cross-domain applications tackling global challenges (e.g., climate security, industrial sustainability, and biodiversity)
  • Big Data in Space science, telecommunications, navigation and synergies between big data processing in all space domains
  • Ethics and trust in AI-driven space policies
  • Cloud-native and digital infrastructures for big data (data spaces and data sovereignty)
  • Advanced processing paradigms (foundation models, AI and knowledge extraction)
  • Enabling foresight with cutting-edge methodologies (digital twins, forecasting, and explainable AI)
  • Disruptive technologies shaping the future (quantum computing, neuromorphic sensing, and high-performance computing).

Why to attend

BiDS’25 is more than just a conference – it’s a platform for collaboration, innovation, and impact.

Participate and learn about the latest innovations, upgrade your skills and meet the event partners from a wide range of organisations, such as the main organizers, ESA, JRC, SatCEN, local organizing partners such as the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, national institutions such as LAIK, LIAA, and leading universities, alongside programming partners DG RTD, DG CNECT, CERN, EUMETSAT, DLR, CNES, ECMWF, FRONTEX, and others.

Besides a main plenary session, poster session, satellite events, and an OSGeo code sprint, you’ll be able to explore our industrial exhibition area, demonstrations, or participate to a B2B event.
