Global fires in 2019

The active fire detection capability of the SLST sensor on board of the Copernicus constellation of Sentinel 3A and Sentinel 3B is being exploited by the European Space Agency to derive systematic consistent counting of fires worldwide.

The prototype product and algorithm have been presented at the Remote sensing of forest fire EARSeL conference in Rome on 3 October 2019.

The striking increase of fires observed during the month of August this year with respect to 2018 amounts to almost 5 times more globally.
