4D Earth: Core+

CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE (CNRS) (FR)

Summary

The advent of continuous geomagnetic monitoring from space over more than 25 years has led to a renewed understanding of the geomagnetic signal, with the discovery of hydromagnetic waves in the fluid core. These carry information not only on the mechanisms that sustain the geodynamo, but also potentially on the solid mantle as well as the inner core.

The latest progress on the interpretation of geomagnetic data have been made possible also thanks to cutting edge numerical simulations of the core dynamics. In this context, the goal of the “4D Earth: Core+” project is to advance the geomagnetic exploration of deep Earth processes, including:

  • The collection and modeling of geomagnetic data via various inverse methods, including a benchmark exercise on the recovery of the core dynamics from magnetic observations, opened to the community.
  • The generation, analysis and exploitation of high performance numerical simulations of the geodynamo in various geodynamical set-ups.
  • The generation of models of the core dynamics that couple the fluid core to the solid mantle and the inner core, keeping in mind their relationship with alternative geophysical observables of the deep Earth (seismic anomalies within the inner core, variation in the Earth rotation speed).
