NORUT has developed an automatic avalanche detection method within a pre-operational processing chain that uses Sentinel-1 data to detect avalanches. This system is being tested in Northern Norway and is used operationally during winter 2017-2018 with the Norwegian Avalanche Warning Service. The goal of this project is to develop our avalanche detection processing chain to operational status anywhere on Earth, where Sentinel-1 data is available. This will be done by setting up the processing chain for five selected avalanche forecasting regions worldwide including Switzerland, North America and Northern Afghanistan with the aim to transfer the methodology to users with in mind the challenge of delivering consistent avalanche activity monitoring data.
