TOWARDS TWO DECADES OF UNPRECEDENTED FOREST BIOMASS MAPS FROM EUROPEAN RADAR SATELLITES (FORBEAR)

STICHTING WAGENINGEN RESEARCH (NL)

Summary

The goal of this project is to further develop and validate a high frequency SAR interferometric phase center (DSM) approach together with existing and forthcoming DTMs to map forest biomass (AGBD). To that end, the study will:
1) develop a novel method for annual AGBD mapping with individual TanDEM-X DSMs and Sentinel-1 time series for change detection;
2) demonstrate the novel method at larger scales in different forests with existing DTMs, by showing about a decade of annual AGBD maps at 50 m resolution;
3) validate AGBD estimation and develop an error model, using both large-scale data from national forest inventories and local supersites, both well-studied and lesser used;
4) prepare for future application with the BIOMASS DTM, including an analysis of resolution, topographic effects, and accuracy requirements of the spaceborne DTM.
