Space Solutions for Energy Challenges

 January 11, 2027 - January 12, 2027
 ESA-ESRIN

Welcome

As the global energy landscape continues to diversify, Earth Observation (EO) technologies are playing an increasingly important role across the energy value chain, supporting planning, development, operations and monitoring of energy projects, while contributing to operational excellence, resilience, security, and sustainability objectives. The relevance of EO applications now extends beyond traditional energy use-cases to renewable energy and other emerging components of the low-carbon energy economy.

Bringing together representatives from across the energy sector and the EO community, the workshop aims to foster cross-sector knowledge exchange, identify common operational needs and gaps, discuss best practices and break down barriers that may hinder collaboration and innovation.

We look forward to welcoming you to ESRIN.

Through presentations, demonstrations, networking and collaborative working sessions, participants will discuss common challenges and explore current and future use of satellite-derived information to inform operational and strategic decision-making across the evolving energy sector. A key focus will be on better understanding and addressing the gap between what satellite technologies deliver and the information energy stakeholders need to make well-informed operational and business decisions.

Starting from key operational decisions, challenges and needs, participants will explore and assess EO solutions available today and discuss the potential of emerging capabilities and planned innovations to address existing gaps and evolving needs in the energy sector. Participants will also discuss key factors shaping operational uptake, including technical capabilities, validation, complementarity of different techniques, integration into existing business processes and workflows, and cost-effectiveness.

ESA experts will participate throughout the workshop and explore effective ways for ESA programmes to support future engagement and advances in EO applications for the energy sector.

About EARSC

The European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC) is the representative body of the European Earth Observation services industry.

Established to promote the development and growth of the Earth Observation sector, EARSC brings together companies and organisations that develop and provide EO-based products, services, and solutions across a wide range of application domains.

EARSC works closely with European institutions, national space agencies, industry partners, and user communities to strengthen the competitiveness of the European EO sector and accelerate the uptake of Earth Observation services in operational markets.

Key areas of activity include:

  • Supporting the growth of the European EO services industry
  • Facilitating interaction between EO service providers and user communities
  • Promoting innovation and commercialisation of EO-based services
  • Encouraging the adoption of EO technologies across multiple sectors
  • Supporting skills development, knowledge exchange, and industry collaboration
  • Contributing to European policies and programmes related to Earth Observation

Within this workshop, EARSC plays an important role in connecting stakeholders from across the energy ecosystem with the European EO services community, helping participants better understand the capabilities, maturity, and practical applications of satellite-derived information and related geospatial technologies.

Through its extensive network of EO companies, EARSC supports the identification of innovative solutions that can address operational challenges across oil and gas, renewable energy, carbon management, and emerging energy sectors.

About IOGP

The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) is the global association representing the upstream oil and gas industry.

IOGP’s members include many of the world’s leading energy companies as well as industry associations and stakeholders involved in energy production activities. The organisation works to advance safe, responsible, and sustainable practices through the development of guidance, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge and experience.

IOGP serves as a platform through which member companies can work together on common challenges, including environmental performance, health and safety, operational efficiency, digital transformation, and emerging technologies.

In recent years, IOGP has actively explored the potential of Earth Observation and remote sensing technologies to support industry operations, environmental monitoring, emissions management, infrastructure surveillance, emergency response, and sustainability objectives.

A major outcome of this work has been the development of the IOGP Remote Sensing Guidelines, which provide practical guidance to help energy companies understand, evaluate, and adopt Earth Observation technologies within operational business processes.

The guidelines aim to:

  • Improve awareness of EO capabilities within the energy sector
  • Support informed adoption of remote sensing technologies
  • Identify suitable industry use cases and applications
  • Promote good practice for integrating EO into operational workflows
  • Encourage collaboration between energy companies and EO service providers

This workshop is part of the broader effort to promote awareness, implementation and operational uptake of the IOGP Remote Sensing Guidelines while extending the discussion to needs and opportunities across the wider energy ecosystem.
