Coast Guards’ Training Course in Remote Sensing for Marine Applications
February 10, 2011
ESA-ESRIN
On 10 February 2011, a remote sensing training course was held for members of the Italian Coast Guard. The course took place at ESA/ESRIN in Frascati, Italy.
Most of the training was provided in English, but part of the theory was given in Italian. In the morning the ESA Earth Observation (EO) Programme and ESA’s activities in maritime surveillance were presented. Information was provided on access to ESA and Third Party Mission EO data, and finally a theoretical lecture was held on the principles of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and its applications for the marine environment.
Practical training took place in the afternoon. The course participants processed SAR data from a variety of sensors, for various marine applications, using the Open Source ESA software toolbox for the exploitation of SAR data, NEST. A presentation and demo was also given on ESA’s Grid Processing on Demand (GPOD) service.
Course contents and teachers:
- Introduction to the ESA Earth Observation Programme – F. Sarti / G. Campbell
- ESA Projects and Capabilities for Marine Surveillance – G. Campbell
- ESA EO Data Access – F. Sarti
- Principi sul SAR e sue applicazioni sul mare – Prof. F. Del Frate – Universita Tor Vergata (in Italian)
- Overview of NEST and Practical Exercise – A. Minchella/ F. Costantini
- ESA’s Grid Processing on Demand (GPOD) – J. Farres
