1st Earth Observation Summer School 2003
August 18, 2003 - August 29, 2003
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:
European Space Agency (ESA) organises a series of summer schools on Monitoring of the Earth System to promote the exploitation of Earth Observation EO data across disciplines, with a specific focus on their assimilation into Earth System models. The Summer Schools last for two-week and are held in ESA/ESRIN (near Rome, Italy).
The first edition of the series took place from 18th to 29th August 2003 and was titled “1st ENVISAT Data Assimilation Summer School on Atmosphere“. It was sponsored by ESA and the World Climate Research Programme. A total of 57 young scientists from 17 countries attended the event.
The Summer School aimed to train a new generation of scientists in the broad range of skills needed to exploit data from satellites, particularly ESA’s Envisat, launched earlier in February 2002. In particular, it focused on supporting the understanding of how the complex meteorological and chemical processes in the atmosphere work and interact.
Therefore, the contents of the School showed how the various Envisat atmospheric instruments could complement each other and how they could produce an consistent accurate 3D picture of the evolution of the atmosphere. This would enable more reliable computer models to be built to forecast how natural causes or the effects of human-induced pollution could change the atmosphere in the future.
The lectures covered issues related to meteorology, chemical assimilation, forecast, atmospheric modeling and radiance, among others.
