MEDICANES

The objective of the MEDICANE project is to exploit Earth Observations (EO) data to advance the understanding of medicane dynamics, improve forecasting of their timely occurrence and quantify the limitations of atmospheric modelling when reproducing relevant high-impact weather.  As a first step, the project will uncover the fundamental gap of providing a physical definition of medicanes. It will also build an unprecedented climatological medicane atlas of previous occurrences, will demonstrate pilot applications for near real time tracking of these catastrophic storms and develop new concepts and tools that address socio-economic impacts.
