Invitation to Tender: “Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich and Jason-3 Tandem flight exploitation (S6-JTEX)”

The foundation of the S6-JTEX study is the detection, characterisation, mitigation and exploitation of differences, discrepancies and measurement features captured in the Level 1 and Level 2 products available from Sentinel6-Michael Freilich (S6-MF), Jason-3 and other satellite, in situ and model data.

The S6-JTEX project is designed to perform a first end-to-end (E2E) analysis and scientific exploitation of S6-MF measurements using 18 months of early mission data fully encompassing the Tandem flight opportunity with Jason-3. S6-JTEX will demonstrate the capability of S6-MF data through scientific exploitation of the mission during tandem phase with Jason-3 and 6-months of nominal orbit operations. The project will be achieved by analysing S6-MF and Jason-3 data together with other satellite and in situ measurements.

The Objectives for the S6-JTEX study are:

  • OBJ-0: Document, justify, and prioritise innovative scientific studies that exploit the capabilities offered by S6-MF for new potential products and applications.
  • OBJ-1: Prepare and or adapt science tools to access, store serve to the science community and process data to be used during the study.
  • OBJ-2: Compile , quality control, document and maintain an open access multi-satellite and on-ground Fiducial Reference Measurement (FRM) data set to address the S6-JTEX aim and objectives.
  • OBJ-3: Identify, characterise, confirm and conduct scientific analyses to mitigate discrepancies between S6-MF, Jason-3 and investigate their origin to reduce uncertainties.
  • OBJ-4: Develop innovative scientific studies that exploit the capabilities offered by S6-MF for new potential products and applications.
  • OBJ-5: Prepare and submit ten Scientific Journal articles reporting the results of the S6-JTEX study.
  • OBJ-6: Coordinate activities, results and outcomes from the study with ESA, S6VT and other relevant bodies during S6-JTEX study.
  • OBJ-7: Develop lessons learned and advice on potential Sentinel-6 tandem activities to S6VT and other relevant bodies.

The study will be conducted over a 24-month period.
