The EO AFRICA initiative, short for African Framework for Research, Innovation, Communities, and Applications, aims to sustain and strengthen an active African research community by fostering innovative processes for the continuous development of African Earth Observation (EO) capabilities.
In collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and to enhance research cooperation between Africa and Europe, a series of tandem projects were successfully launched between 2022 and 2024. These projects focused on developing innovative and reusable open-source EO algorithms and applications tailored to African challenges, leveraging advanced cloud-based data access and computing infrastructure. Research results from these efforts are available here.
A recent call for research proposals by the EO AFRICA R&D Facility invited ideas addressing current and future challenges in water and food security in Africa. As a result, 10 projects have been awarded funding.

A new call for proposals is expected in 2025.
