The 6th ESA, ECMWF CAMS, EUMETSAT Training School in Atmospheric Composition

For the 6th year running, ESA, ECMWF and EUMETSAT joined forces to further the knowledge of keen early career scientists on atmospheric composition monitoring and modelling.

The course brought 30 students and expert lecturers from all over the world to NILU, a Norwegian climate research institute, to train students on the fundamentals of Earth Observation through the use of satellite data, emissions inventories, modelling concepts and processes such as data assimilation and model evaluation.

Before the course, a series of webinars streamed on YouTube laid the groundwork for the students to get a head start on the course content. Once all had arrived at NILU, the students participated in an interesting mix of lectures, project work, demonstrations and practical sessions on how to use Python to interact with and plot data from satellites and models. Scientists from various backgrounds and specialisations, including the newly launched EarthCARE, gave overviews of their day-to-day. After the packed daily schedules, evenings were free to hopefully glimpse the northern lights, or go to the famous Munch museum in Oslo.

Next year EUMETSAT take charge of organising the course and will bring their expert knowledge and specialisms to the course.
