Two scientists working on ESA-funded research projects have recently been honoured with prestigious international awards for their exceptional contributions to Earth science and remote sensing.
Felix Gerick, from CNES and the Royal Observatory of Belgium, was awarded the prestigious Doornbos Memorial Prize during the Study of the Earth’s Deep Interior (SEDI) conference, held in Great Barrington, MA, USA, from June 23-28. His work, conducted as part of the Swarm+ 4D Deep Earth: Core project, was recognized for its key contributions in identifying and characterizing rapid magneto-Coriolis waves within geomagnetic field variations. This prize, given in honour of the Dutch seismologist Durk Doornbos, is recognising outstanding work on the Earth’s deep interior.
Mariana Belgiu, from ITC-University of Twente and project manager of the HyNutri and EO4NUTRI projects, has received the 2023 Professor De Winter Award for her article titled “PRISMA and Sentinel-2 spectral response to the nutrient composition of grains”, which was published in the renowned journal Remote Sensing of Environment. This award celebrates her significant advancements in the use of satellite data for assessing crop health and nutrient composition. The prize, named after Professor de Winter who passed away in 2005, is intended as recognition for excellent scientific research and as a boost for further developing a scientific career.
