openEO platform: a Federated Open Earth Observation Platform

Summary

openEO platform is being implemented as a versatile  cloud-based processing and analytics environment for Earth Observation data. The concepts adopts a truly federated architecture with initial deployments in EODC, TerraScope, CreoDIAS and the EuroDataCube. This set-up will ensure a large variety of EO datasets are available. Key elements of the platform design include abstracting underlying complexities of processing operations with a high-level and intuitive API and front end libraries, colocation of data repositories and processing resources, pixel-level data access or lazy evaluation/deferred execution. OpenEO platform builds on top of achievements of the H2020 openEO project. The latter achieved foundational work on utilising different EO cloud back ends through unified front end libraries in Python, R and JavaScript. As OpenEO platform is federating different cloud environments and is incorporating existing technology solutions, the first public service offering is foreseen for Q1 2021. The development of the service capability and functional portfolio is driven by 9 challenging use cases including for example generating on-demand/on-the-fly ARD data according to user defined criteria, crop mapping, vessel detection, NRT forest damage mapping – all to be performed over regional to continental scales using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data.
