PUMAS 2024 – Uses and Applications of SAOCOM and Sentinel-1 for Land Monitoring
October 14 - October 18
Teófilo Tabanera Space Center
Background
The National Commission for Space Activities (CONAE), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) are jointly organising a course on Remote Sensing as a Tool for Monitoring Land and Forest Resources. This course focuses on the uses and applications of the SAOCOM and Sentinel-1 SAR missions. It is part of the PUMAS initiative (Promotion of the Use and Applications of Mission and Science), co-managed by ESA and CONAE, aimed at promoting the development of scientific and technological applications from satellite products of both agencies.
Objectives
The aim of this course are to:
- Enable students to work with SAR images, with special emphasis on the Sentinel-1 and SAOCOM missions
- Help students understand the content of a SAR image and how to extract geophysical and biophysical information
- Teach the fundamentals of polarimetry, interferometry, and interferometric polarimetry and their applications in different areas of Earth Observation
Topics
The training will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to Synthetic Aperture Radars
- Radar Interferometry
- Radar Polarimetry
- Interferometric Radar Polarimetry
- Applications and use cases of polarimetric, interferometric, and polarimetric-interferometric techniques
Participation
The 5-day course will be held from October 14 to 18, 2024, at the Teófilo Tabanera Space Center in Córdoba, Argentina. It is aimed at professionals, students, and researchers with previous knowledge in remote sensing and geomatics, interested in deepening their understanding of Sentinel-1 and SAOCOM data for Earth observation. The course has a minimum capacity of 25 people and a maximum of 50.
Interested participants can apply from July 3, 2024 to August 5, 2024. Selected candidates will be notified during the week of August 23, 2024. The GRSS offers limited economic aid for those who do not reside in the province of Córdoba.
