SUMMARY:4th ESA Advanced Course on Radar Polarimetry 2017
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) programme element\, the European Space Agency (ESA) organised the 4th Advanced Course on Radar Polarimetry devoted to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit dual and fully polarimetric data for science and applications development. \nPost graduate\, PhD students\, post-doctoral research scientists and users from European countries and Canada interested in Radar Polarimetry and its applications were invited to apply to the 4 day course on the subject\, which was held in ESA ESRIN\, Frascati\, Italy from 30 January to 2 February 2017. Research scientists and students from all other countries were also welcome to apply and participate to the course subject to space availability. \nNo participation fees were charged for the training but participants were expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses (financial support was not available). The official language of the training course was English. \nThe main objectives of the course were to: \n\nTrain the next generation of European and Canadian Principal Investigators (PIs);\nExplain theoretical principles\, processing algorithms\, data products and their use in applications;\nIntroduce available tools and methods for the exploitation of dual polarization and fully polarimetric data;\nProvide first-hand and up-to-date information on the state of the art in Radar Polarimetry and Polarimetric SAR Interferometry.\n\nThe course provided a substantial and balanced introduction to the basics and advanced concepts of radar polarimetry theory\, applications and systems with the objective of preparing for the scientific exploitation of the BIOMASS and SAOCOM-CS missions. \nThe course included theoretical lectures as well as hands-on computing exercises exposing students to PolSAR and Pol-InSAR data processing for remote sensing applications\, illustrating mainly the use of PolSARpro software\, the ESA Toolbox for exploitation of EO SAR polarimetric data\, with a focus on full-pol (ALOS-1\,2\, RADARSAT-2\, TerraSAR-X) and dual-pol Sentinel-1 spaceborne products\, and P-band airborne campaign data as a precursor for the BIOMASS mission. \nAccess here below the full programme and training material (both theory and practicals). \n  \n \n \n  \n
