SUMMARY:4th ESA Advanced Training Course in Land Remote Sensing 2013
DESCRIPTION:The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising a series of advanced thematic training courses devoted to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit data from ESA and Third Party EO Missions for science and applications development. \nPost graduate\, PhD students\, post-doctoral research scientists and users from European countries and Canada interested in land remote sensing and its applications were invited to attend a 5 day course which was held in Harokopio University\, Athens\, Greece from 01 to 05 July 2013. Research scientists and students from all other countries were also welcome to apply and participate to the course subject to space availability. \nObjectives:\nThe advanced land training course aimed at: \n\nTraining the next generation of European and Canadian Principal Investigators (PIs);\nTeaching and demonstrating theoretical principles\, processing algorithms\, data products and their use in applications;\nIntroducing tools and methods for the exploitation of EO satellite data;\nStimulating and supporting the exploitation of ESA EO and Third Party Mission (TPM) remote sensing data for land applications.\n\nContents:\nThe advanced course provided a substantial and balanced introduction to the basic theory and applications related to land remote sensing. It was organised around four main components: \n\nTheoretical fundamentals of Optical\, Thermal and SAR remote sensing\, focusing on exploitation of ESA and Third Party Missions and products;\nEO land applications lectures on urban planning\, land cover\, terrain motion\, hazards\, forest bio-physical retrievals and regional water balance;\nPracticals using ESA toolboxes (BEAM\, NEST and POLSARPRO)\, 3rd party sw and complementary datasets from achieved and simulated satellite data;\nEO data processing and product demonstration for land resources monitoring\n\nThe training course included formal lectures by leading scientists as well as hands-on computing exercises exposing students to both SAR and Optical/Thermal remote sensing. Practicals exploited EO data from the ERS\, Envisat\, Explorers\, TPM and national missions as well as simulation data from the upcoming ESA’s Sentinels. \nLecturers:\nThe team of lecturers was composed of Principal Investigators and Professors from leading universities and research institutions \nAccess here below the full programme. \n \n\n\n\n
