Technology developments that have enabled the emergence of a new kind of participatory medium for open online distance education, including innovative learning material allowing students to engage personally in research. The MOOC-ATM project shall provide an introduction to how Earth Observation (EO) data from satellites is acquired and used to address climate issues, ranging from science to applications. Specifically MOOC-ATM shall foster the use of data from sensors related to atmospheric chemistry and dynamics providing the basis for a wide variety of scientific and societal applications. Of particular interest is the analysis of new instrument data from Sentinel-5p/ TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and the wind mission Aeolus. The work should as well incorporate data from operational missions Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME-2A/B/C) and possibly previous sensors on Envisat like the Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars (GOMOS), Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) and SCanning Imaging Absorption SpectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) including established sources for satellite data validation.
